Acer vs Samsung

Ok, so on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, the new Google Chromebooks were announced. They're going to be released on June 15th, and there are two models: the Samsung 5-series, and another one made by Acer. I've been getting a lot of questions about which one will be better. Well, here are the facts.

Samsung:

  • 12.1" (1280x800) Screen
  • 3.26 lbs
  • 8.5 hrs of battery life
  • Intel Atom Dual-Core Processor
  • Wi-Fi or 3G
  • HD Webcam
  • Fullsize keyboard
  • Fully-clickable trackpad
  • $429 (Wi-Fi)
  • $499 (3G)

Acer:

  • 11.6" Display
  • 2.95 lbs
  • 6 hrs battery life
  • Intel Atom Dual-Core Processor
  • Wi-Fi and 3G
  • HD Webcam
  • HDMI port
  • Fullsize keyboard
  • Fully-clickable trackpad
  • $349 (Wi-Fi)
  • Price for 3G model hasn't been announced

So, as you can see, the Samsung 5-series is probably better value for the price; better battery life, bigger screen. Although, the Acer model is probably made for people who are always needing a laptop wherever they go. This is due to the: lighter weight, and the smaller screen.
If you're planning on using this for everyday browsing for education or business, I would go with the Samsung 5-series. If you are a casual user who is planning on taking this Chromebook into a coffee shop or library every so often, I would definitely choose the Acer Chromebook.

I would recommend keeping an eye on Acer. They are known for low quality at the moment, but recently they switched from the manufacturer most companies are using (Quanta computer, just...look it up)to an unknown third party manufacturer.

I would also mention the difference in the 2 screens, the samsung uses an LED foil system and therefore is MUCH more thin and light. Not to mention the quality of it is absolutely unparalleled (you can see this on any recent samsung laptop though)
